At the beginning of the semester I was very curious what the course “New Media in Foreign Language Education” (NMFLE) was about.  I have to mention that I am browsing through the web quite often but it never came to my mind to look for tools for school. The web always was a place to waste time. NMFLE did open my eyes. These days we do use the internet every day to look for information, to buy things online, to connect with our far-away friends, we even do order pizza via internet. Why not using it for school?

During the semester we talked about various tools and websites. Some of them were old friends to me, like for example twitter or skype. Others I did never hear about beforehand, for example storybird or delicious. Some of them I would use at school, for example word clouds, others I would not use, for example twitter. Nevertheless, it is of vital importance to know your possibilities. You do not have to use everything, but you must know what you can use.

Another aspect I did not think before I took this class was legal aspects. I did not about copyright issues, but not in that detail we talked about. Of course you do have to make sure, that your pupils do not “mess around” with their personal data. As a teacher you are responsible for protecting your pupils.

All in all the course of NMFLE was very useful to me. It was the most practically orientated class I took. It made me wanting to enter the nearest school to snatch up English classes.
