Getting to know new tools

Word clouds
The first new tool, I got to know, was a word cloud. Though I have seen them on various blogs, I did not know how to build them. Neither did I think of using them in school. Nevertheless, I think they are a good tool, especially in teaching literature. The teacher could build a word cloud out of the words of the story or the poem the class has to discuss.
Of course, the teacher has to make sure, that the word cloud is embedded appropriately in the lesson.
I will definitvely use wordles at school.

Twitter
The microblogging service Twitter was actually not a new tool to me. I tried a few years ago. To be honest, I do not find it useful. I do not know what information to tweet, or whether pupils would follow their teacher. In my opinion, Twitter is not a reliable enough to contact my pupils, because you cannot say, who read the latest tweet and who did not. On the other hand, Twitter does form an option when it comes to share links, or information concerning for example special events.
Still I think Emails are better to reach really every pupil.
I will not use Twitter at school.

delicous.com
In contrast to Twitter, delicous.com was new to me. I like to save all my favourite links on one website, the option to share it with others is very useful. It is a very well structured page, by tagging every single link you get a good chance to find what you are looking for. This page forms a very good opportunity to share useful links with your pupils, i.e. to give further information or to give supportive links when it comes to prepare for exams.
I will use this page at school.

netvibes.com
netvibes.com as well as delicious was new to me. I think it is a good idea, to have a website, where you can see all news at a glance. Especially, when you use different computers, for example one at school and one at home, it is very helpful to log in and have it there.
Personally, I do not like netvibes anyways. I find it confusing. Maybe I have to get used to it, but honestly I do not see necessity to do so. I use a laptop I can take with me; therefore I rarely use different computers which makes it superfluous to use netvibes.
I will not use netvibes.com.
